I don’t think anyone in my family – immediate or extended – has ever gotten an inheritance. We’ve been poor all our lives and despite this, have always remained in good spirits.
I have often wished I had a rich ancestor somewhere that left me millions. I sure as hell wouldn’t be buying a mansion and jewels.
This is what I’d do with my inheritance:
- pay off my debt
- invest
- give to animal charities and abused people charities
- buy a large plot of land
- build a modest log cabin
- start an animal rescue
- help people
- buy books from struggling authors
That’s just a start.
What would you do if you got an inheritance?
I think I would be happy to just live the rest of my life being with the people that I love. I’m quite frugal so I’m certain I wouldn’t spend too much of an inheritance anyway.

That’s amazing!
I need to be frugal. I am terrible with money… I pay my bills, but when I have extra it goes toward things I want.

I learned to be frugal when I was a single mother. The habits stuck after that.

I’d be completely baffled by a blindingly substantial windfall. I could figure out what to do with $100,000 well enough, though! We’ve actually received an inheritance, twice: the first, $10G went right onto the mortagage (it cut so many years of payments!), and later, husband relative (another) left us money.. I got a new car and $25G. I wish I hadn’t blown through both of them! I like your list, by the way. 🙂

Wow! That is awesome! Smart paying down some of that mortgage.

I think I’d follow my mother’s monetary advice (which has always served me well): Spend a third, save a third, give a third away.
